My Ceramic Journey

My Ceramic Journey

Hello, my name is Sue Waring and I am the owner and creator of WonkyDaisy. Originally from Ellesmere Port on the Wirral, I moved to Stockport in 1986 and then onto Heaton Chapel in 1996, where I’ve lived ever since and it is here where I started my ceramic journey in 2018.

Looking to try out different crafts I found a local potter who was offering pottery sessions. I went along and was completely hooked the moment I was let loose on a potter’s wheel. From the moment I made my first pot, I knew that this was what I wanted to do

It wasn’t long after that I bought myself a secondhand potter’s wheel and set about organising a creative space in a corner of my shed. In 2021, realising I needed extra space, I had a small studio built at the back of the house. From here I can observe the ever-changing seasons which play a significant role in my ceramic work and inspires me to craft pieces that reflect the beauty and intricacy of the environment around me.

I am largely self taught and make everything from home in my little studio. I mainly make one-off or similar shaped functional pieces which are handmade either on a potter’s wheel, slab constructed, coil built or pinched. The clay I use is stoneware and all the glazes for my tableware pieces are foodsafe. Everything is crafted by me and no two pieces are exactly the same making each piece a one-of-a-kind.

The thing I love most about working with clay is that apart from a few fundamentals, there are no rules. As I travel on my ceramic journey I aim to capture the essence of nature’s beauty and its intricate details, whilst having the freedom to explore and experiment, embracing the happy accidents while enjoying the creative process.
